Aquaponics Project

Project Description

Since 2016, Cameroon has experienced an increase in the rate of rural-urban migration as well as inter-urban migration. This has led to an increase in the population of cities in the French-speaking regions of the country, like Yaoundé and Douala. Due the growth in population size, there has been an increase in the demand for food as well as arable land. In a bid to address this concern, we launched the Aquaponics Farming project, a climate-smart method of agriculture, which merges fish farming and crop cultivation.

Project Goals

Through the Aquaponics project, we aimed at;

  • Reduce farming cost, thereby making farm outputs less costly
  • Provide Internally Displaced Persons with a source of income
  • Provide families with nutritive high-value vegetables such as cucumbers, broccoli and cauliflower
  • Reduce the amount of water used for farming and solve the problem of irrigation
  • Promote environmental protection through limited or no use of artificial fertilizers

Project Outcome

  • Trained over 15 young girls and women on how to operate an aquaponics system.
  • Cultivated more than four species of vegetables (Cauliflower, Broccoli, Cucumber, etc)
  • Farmed over 50fish
  • Carried out market research on how to link farmers to buyers so as to valorize farm output

Call To Action

After the pilot phase of the Aquaponics Project in 2021, we had to put the project on hold due to limited finances. However, preparations are being made to resume the project and to assist past trainees in the construction of aquaponics systems. This is a huge task, but we are confident that with your help, these women and girls can have their own aquaponics farms which will enable them feed and support their families. Your donation makes all the difference.
