Household Water Treatment and Safe Storage (HWTS)
Workshop Description
Household Water Treatment and Safe Storage (HWTS) is an excellent intervention option to improve access to clean safe drinking water in homes, schools, and clinics in your community.
Learn the basics in this series of short, online learning modules. Explore the advantages and limitations of a wide variety of household water treatment options and discover key factors and considerations to implement a successful HWTS program.
Objectives
Upon completion of the workshop, participants will be able to:
Define safe drinking water.
Identify risks to water safety from the source to a user’s glass.
Propose multiple barriers (behaviors and technologies) that reduce risks from unsafe drinking.
Water.
Describe when and where HWTS solutions will most likely be appropriate and effective.
Evaluate the benefits and limitations of different HWTS options.
Work with users to select appropriate HWTS options for a specific context.
Propose strategies to support behavior change (towards correct, consistent, and continued use of HWTS systems)
Describe considerations that increase the likelihood of sustained impact through HWTS.
This workshop covers core themes:
Topics covered in this series include:
- The Multi-Barrier Approach to Safe Drinking Water.
- Introduction to Household Water Treatment and Safe Storage.
- Source Water Protection.
- Safe Water Transportation.
- Sedimentation Methods.
- Filtration Methods.
- Disinfection Methods.
- Safe Storage and Handling.
- ProgramImplementation Approaches
Participants begin the workshop by exploring why safe drinking water matters, how the global community measures access to safe drinking water, and current evidence about the effectiveness of HWTS solutions (Safe Drinking Water and HWTS).
Next, participants draw their water supply systems and identify risks to drinking water safety. They learn about water-related diseases in their region, and they identify barriers to users’ glass (Water Safety and the Multi-Barrier Approach). With this understanding of risks and barriers, participants take a hands-on look at options for sedimentation, filtration, disinfection, and safe storage of drinking water. They evaluate the benefits and limitations of various options, and they describe how appropriate water treatment and safe storage methods can be combined within the Multi-Barrier Approach (HWTS Options).
Finally, participants explore what’s needed for HWTS initiatives to be successful. With scenarios and case studies to guide them, participants explore best practices for technology selection, behavior change, and HWTS implementation (HWTS Implementation).
Participants
Ideal participants for this workshop are people responsible for making decisions about HWTS. For example, they may be responsible for selecting HWTS options, selling water treatment products, creating policies and regulations related to water treatment, or implementing a household water treatment program.
The ideal participants:
- Want to improve the lives of others?
- Have some experience in water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH).
- Can read and write.
- Are eager to share their experiences and insights
RDWB celebrates diversity. We are committed to creating an inclusive learning environment in which all participants can share their experiences and learn from each other.
Methods of Instruction
This workshop includes activities, demonstrations, discussions, scenarios, presentations, and case studies. Active participant engagement in all learning activities is encouraged.
Training Materials
The following materials will be provided:
- HWTS Technical Briefs and other relevant resources will be provided on USB drives.
- Access to CAWST’s online HWTS resources (fact sheets, case studies, technical briefs, and more)
